Grinding methods
In peripheral grinding, material is removed by the wheel periphery. Face grinding uses the working face of the tool. Creep-feed grinding has different requirements for the grinding wheel, bond, structure and cooling because of its higher stock removal.
Abrasive selection
Confirmed options include aluminium oxide Al2O3, ceramic grain, silicon carbide SiC, CBN and diamond. The abrasive is selected according to the workpiece material, hardness, required stock removal and desired surface quality; no single abrasive is suitable for every process.
Grinding-wheel shapes
Straight wheels – TYPE 1; cup wheels – TYPE 6 and TYPE 11; dish wheels; and grinding segments. The wheel shape depends on the machine design and the selected surface-grinding method.

Selection considers the material and hardness of the workpiece, machine manufacturer and model, wheel dimensions, grinding method, stock removal, surface quality and roughness, cooling and the existing wheel specification.
Related technical solutions
For rotational parts, cylindrical or centerless grinding may be more suitable. CBN and diamond wheels cover confirmed superabrasive applications, while gear grinding is a separate technical field.
