Grinding Wheels for Cylindrical Grinding

Technical grinding-wheel solutions for precision cylindrical grinding.

Grinding wheel for cylindrical grinding

Cylindrical grinding is a precision process for rotational components. It is used for external and, where the technology permits, internal cylindrical surfaces where dimensional accuracy, geometry and the required surface quality are important.

Main benefits

  • External cylindrical grinding
  • Internal cylindrical grinding
  • Traverse grinding
  • Plunge grinding
  • Machining of shoulders and tapered surfaces

Industrial applications

Confirmed applications include shafts and pins, bearing surfaces, hydraulic components, rolls and precision rotational parts.

Grinding methods

Traverse grinding uses longitudinal feed between centres or in a chuck. In plunge grinding, the working width is machined by feeding the grinding wheel radially into the part. Depending on part geometry, shoulders and tapered surfaces may also be machined.

Abrasive selection

Confirmed abrasive options include high-grade aluminium oxide, sintered aluminium oxide, CBN and silicon carbide SiC. Abrasive, grit, hardness, structure and bond are selected for the specific application.

Grinding-wheel shapes

Confirmed shapes include straight TYPE 1 wheels, recessed TYPE 5 and TYPE 7 wheels, and profile or form wheels.

Selection objectives

The specification considers dimensional accuracy, roundness, cylindricity, required surface roughness, stable stock removal and limitation of thermal effects.
