DIN 912 / ISO 4762
DIN 912 / ISO 4762 socket head cap screws are intended primarily for engineering and industrial joints. The internal hexagon drive enables efficient tightening where clearance around the screw head is limited.
DIN 912 is the traditional designation still widely used in technical practice. ISO 4762 is the corresponding international standard for coarse metric threads. The standards are close, but they are not absolutely identical for every historical diameter, length or thread version.
The materials, property classes, finishes and lengths below describe possible manufacturing and supply programmes. They do not confirm JENPEX stock for a specific combination.

Material versions
Steel
For engineering joints with specified strength. Property class and surface finish are selected separately.
A2 stainless steel
Corrosion-resistant material for general industrial and indoor environments.
A4 stainless steel
Material with increased resistance in more demanding or chloride-bearing environments.
Steel screw property classes
8.8
Standard-strength engineering joints.
10.9
More highly loaded engineering joints.
12.9
High-strength joints and demanding industrial applications.
Not every size is automatically available in every property class and material. We verify the requested combination individually.
Steel surface finishes
Surface finish is a separate property and must not be confused with the screw material. Depending on the version, steel screws may be supplied with:
- black oxide finish,
- electroplated zinc finish,
- other industrial surface finishes according to the joint requirements.
The finish, property class, size and quantity must be checked together.

Available lengths
The following guide shows ranges commonly manufactured or supplied for the individual diameters. It is neither a complete normative matrix nor a statement of current JENPEX stock.
The range of manufactured and available lengths depends on diameter, material, property class and surface finish.
| Thread d | Indicative L range | Note |
|---|---|---|
| M3 | 5–50 mm | mainly short screws for precision mechanisms |
| M4 | 6–80 mm | short to medium lengths |
| M5 | 8–100 mm | short to medium lengths |
| M6 | 10–120 mm | short to longer engineering versions |
| M8 | 12–160 mm | broad engineering range |
| M10 | 16–200 mm | broad engineering range |
| M12 | 20–200 mm | medium and longer versions |
| M14 | 25–200 mm | non-preferred ISO size; verify the specific version |
| M16 | 25–250 mm | medium to long versions |
| M18 | 20–300 mm | DIN 912 size; range must be checked by version |
| M20 | 35–300 mm | medium to long versions |
| M22 | 40–300 mm | DIN 912 size; range must be checked by version |
| M24 | 40–300 mm | medium to long versions |
| M27 | 60–300 mm | DIN 912 size; range must be checked by version |
| M30 | 50–360 mm | longer industrial versions |
| M36 | 60–400 mm | longer industrial versions |
Need a non-standard length?
Not every diameter and length combination is manufactured as standard. A very long screw may lie outside the standard or the usual manufacturing programme.
If you cannot find the required size in the standard range, send us the diameter, requested length, material or property class and quantity. We will check availability, a suitable alternative or a manufacturing option.
DIN 912 or ISO 4762?
DIN 912 is the older designation, but it remains widely used in practice. ISO 4762 is the international designation for this type of coarse-thread socket head cap screw.
JENPEX therefore uses the combined designation DIN 912 / ISO 4762, so buyers can find the product under either standard.
Fine metric threads are covered separately by ISO 12474. When changing standards, verify the thread, diameter and length.
Typical applications
- mechanical engineering,
- manufacturing equipment,
- automotive industry,
- CNC machines,
- fixtures and clamping devices,
- moulds and tools,
- hydraulic and pneumatic equipment,
- machine servicing and maintenance.
Technical information
What is DIN 912 / ISO 4762?
It is a socket head cap screw with a cylindrical head and internal hexagon drive for precision engineering and industrial joints.
Are DIN 912 and ISO 4762 completely identical?
Not in every case. DIN 912 is the older designation, and the specified edition must be checked for historical or peripheral diameters, lengths and thread versions.
Is every size available in property classes 8.8, 10.9 and 12.9?
No. Property classes apply to steel versions, and supply depends on diameter, length, finish and the manufacturing programme.
What is the difference between material and surface finish?
Steel, A2 and A4 identify material versions. Black oxide, zinc plating and other industrial coatings are separate finishes selected mainly for steel screws.
